What a great blessing it was to have Dr. Jim Gosney and his wife Susan with us. They were sent here by World Medical Mission to help meet our dental needs. Dr. Jim and his wife worked hard to pull teeth and fill cavities on many of our public school teachers and families. The school was even closed for a day while the teachers got their teeth taken care of. We really enjoyed the Gosneys and hope to have them back soon. What a wonderful couple and great example of a Godly marriage. Thank you Dr Jim, Susan and World Medical Mission.

If you have been to visit us in the DR you are probably aware of our electrical challenges. The challenges have increased over the past year with less supply of electricity from the city, or grid. Fortunately, we have a power inverter for each building which provides back up energy supply when the grid goes down. This is extremely important, especially for our safety. Over the past few months we have received very little grid energy causing total blackouts, almost nightly. The inverters require batteries to maintain back up power, and these batteries need to be charged on a regular basis. The batteries usually need to be replaced every 2 years. Our system for the whole campus requires at least 36 batteries, more if we want longer back up time. Currently we need to replace 20 batteries at a cost of $125 each. We are also looking into purchasing a large back up generator that can help supply power to the whole system and keep our batteries charged. The generator will be especially important when the pavillion is in frequent use.

It is quite a popular place with young people and families coming to enjoy good pizza which is nonexistant in our area. It is something the people looked forward to on the weekends. It is a great opportunity for young people to get work experience, learn about business, responsibility, hard work and earn some income. A few months ago our oven broke down and our dough mixer needs repair. At this time we are not able to make pizzas but we added ice cream to our menu. As you can imagine, ice cream has been a big hit. We are able to continue to generate income for our workers. Our goal for next year is to get our equipment repaired and get back to making pizzas. We have people coming by frequently asking when the pizza will be back. The cost to repair the oven and the mixer is $1250.

Please visit our website if you would like to help keep pumping out the pizzas. http://www.delcorazon.org/help-out/contribute-financially/

One of our goals at Delcorazon is to train the younger generation to be the future Christian leaders of El Catey and the Dominican Republic. We identify those who have a desire to learn and grow and encourage them to get involved in the ministry. We create a paying job, have scheduled Bible studies and regular “staff” meetings which prepares them for future positions of employment and leadership. We try to be a “hinge” in which we identify the strengths of an individual, encourage and develop that strength, then help them achieve their dream or passion. Meet our boys:

Jeffrey

Jeffrey is my right hand man. He joined us years ago as a volunteer when we were constructing the baseball field. He showed up faithfully every day and spent a great deal of time with me. Shortly after joining us he turned his life over to Jesus and has grown tremendously. Last year he completed nursing school and almost runs our clinic. Jeffrey is incredibly gifted and a tremendous contributer to our ministry. His heart is commited to remaining in El Catey and his aspirations are to become a dentist so he can provide dental care to our local community. Jeffrey lives with us and works hard to keep the ministry running smoothly.

Gato

One of the first boys that I met in El Catey was Gato. He was 8 years old. We have been very close over the years. A few years ago his mother moved to Santo Domingo and he went with her. He has struggled in school and more so in Santo Domingo. Last year he and his mother decided that it would be best for him to return to El Catey. He returned and now lives with us. We are able to help him with his education and he works on the campus maintaining the grounds and the baseball field. Gato believes that he has a long term future with Del Corazon.

Freddy

Freddy has grown up around the ministry, playing baseball in the little league, coming to VBS, and having his teeth pulled when the dentists are in town. He joined us to meet our agricultural needs by working in the greenhouse and tending to our fruit trees. He finished high school and desires to go to the university to study accounting. We have put him in charge of managing the pizzeria and ice cream sales.

Yan

Yan has been around before he could walk. He comes from a solid family with Christain parents and had his own personal relationship with Jesus. He has a big heart and is a natural servant. He has developed a passion for medicine and spends most of his time with me in the clinic. He loves to help people and particularly enjoys taking care of their wounds. He wants to be a doctor.

If you would like to help train our leaders please visit out website to find out how. http://www.delcorazon.org/help-out/contribute-financially/

Sickle Cell Anemia occurs when there is a defect in the structure of the red blood cell which decreases a person’s ability to carry oxygen to their tissues. As a result, children with sickle cell experience a crisis almost every 3 months, which may involve pain anywhere in the body and difficulty breathing. Here in the DR children usually get a blood transfusion which is an expensive and time consuming process for the family, and certainly not pleasant for the child.

We provide a medicine for these children which acts to increase the amount of fetal hemoglobin in their body and helps them to carry oxygen more efficiently, decreasing the frequency and severity of crises, decreasing the amount of blood transfusions, and increasing the quality of life for the child and the entire family. The cost to provide medication for each child is $20 monthly.

Please visit our website if you would like to help a child with sickle cell anemia.

It has been part of the vision for 9 years and it is finally here, all but the concrete floor.
The completion of the pavillion is one of the most significant milestones in the construction process of our ministry campus. There is no other structure like it anywhere near our area. We have already hosted church and school activites involving local and distant visitors. It is used daily as a hangout for the youth as well as older adults. Next year we hope to see many more worship concerts, church services and community events as well as the daily gathering place to eat pizza and ice cream. Having a concrete floor will make use of the pavillion easier, more functional and safer. Would you consider contributing to the completion of the concrete floor? The cost to complete this 7500 sq ft floor is approximately $18,000. It is a great eternal investment. Please visit our website and click on “help out”, then ministry needs, if you feel led. www.delcorazon.org

Our Pavillion and our sports facilities hosted El Colegio Evangelico Dominicano, a private Christain school in Sanchez to a celebration of this national holiday. 115 students, the faculty, the pastor and parents were present in the morning for instructional activities, then in the afternoon to participate in various sports such as basketball, baseball, volleyball, soccer and jump rope. I had the opportunity to share with them a word from the Bible in 1 Timothy 4 regarding the value of physical exercise and the importance of spiritual exercise, which is similar but whose benefits will last forever. The kids played their hearts out. It was good.

A few weeks ago a leader from a local church came by to inform me that there was going to be a concert at our place. He even showed me the tickets that were already printed up. “OK, thats great. Thanks for letting me know.” I replied. Last week was our first big event. The concert went very well. There were over 500 people attending and plenty of room for more. The local church was able to raise money for some needs that they had. We look forward to many more concerts, worship services and activites.
