The dental clinic is ready. Ted Cooper from Indianapolis, John Reed and Karen Kenny from Memphis, Dr. Chris Rowland, Council his son, Parker and Brad, came and worked very hard getting everything together to prepare the clinic. Jeffrey is in his second semester of dental school and is very excited about starting to see patients. Dr Rowland and Jeffrey will begin patient care this month. Practice, practice, practice….

So the guys are improving on their instruments every time we meet. The goal is to do a lesson with each of them at least 5 days out of the week, and so far they have been following through with their lessons, as well as coming the Bible studies on Monday and Wednesday mornings. I now have two more students to make the total 6, with two drummers, three guitar players, and one bass player.

I can see that as the days go by, our bond as brothers continues to grow. I look forward to this last month and few days with them, and pray that the Lord continues to strengthen all of us in our relationships with Him, and with each other.

Sickle Cell Anemia occurs when there is a defect in the structure of the red blood cell which decreases a person’s ability to carry oxygen to their tissues. As a result, patients with sickle cell experience a crisis almost every 3 months, which may involve pain anywhere in the body and difficulty breathing. Here in the DR, patients usually get a blood transfusion which is an expensive and time consuming process for the family, and certainly not pleasant for the patient.

We provide a medicine for these patients which acts to increase the amount of fetal hemoglobin in their body and helps them to carry oxygen more efficiently, decreasing the frequency and severity of crises, decreasing the amount of blood transfusions, and increasing the quality of life for the patient and the entire family. The cost to provide medication for each patient is $23 monthly or $276 a year.

We currently have 5 sickle cell patients waiting for sponsors.

The Dental Clinic

We are anxiously awaiting the arrival of the container loaded with high quality dental supplies and equipment. Dr Chris Rowland from Memphis, TN, worked very hard to collect the equipment from generous donors such as Les Binkley and World Medical Missions. As soon as the container arrives we will begin setting everything in place to make it most likely the best equipped dental clinic for miles around. Dr Rowland has taken a leave from his practice in Memphis and moved to the Dominican with his wife and four children. They are living in Sosua, about an hour and a half away, where they are working with a discipleship ministry. His main objective is to set up a first class dental clinic on our campus which will serve El Catey and the surrounding communities. The clinic will be an ideal facility to host dental missionaries and will provide outstanding training for Jeffrey until he graduates from dental school and is able to take it over. We are so grateful for Dr Rowland and his family for their sacrifice and service which will undoubtedly have an eternal impact.

Dental School Scholarship

Jeffrey is an exceptional, very gifted individual. We are so blessed to have him as our “Dominican son” and part of our ministry. We believe that Jeffrey is a genuine Godly man of the future, a true “home grown” local leader. He has expressed the desire to become a dentist and stay in his home town to work with the people that he has grown up with and known all of his life. He has been working with us for 4 years and intends to continue as long as God allows. He started dental school last month in Santo Domingo. It has been difficult not to have him around all the time, but so exciting to look forward to the future. We have already started working on a permanent dental clinic on our campus which will be Jeffrey’s new home in 4 years. We and Jeffrey would be so grateful if you should decide to contribute to funding his dental education.

He has already received a partial scholarship. His remaining tuition is $1000 for this school year and $400 monthly for books, food, transportation and housing. This is truly a worthy investment.

Worship Matters

Most people don’t seem to have a full understanding of the term “worship”. To briefly define it, I have chosen “a direct expression of our ultimate purpose for living to glorify God and fully to enjoy Him forever.” The term “worship” is derived from the term “worth-ship”. When we are praising God we are ascribing Him worth.

My goal in coming to El Catey is to spread this meaning, and the importance of living a worshipful life while teaching the skill of playing musical instruments. So far we have had 2 Bible studies in the first week of being here and multiple lessons with each of my 4 students: Jeffery on bass guitar, Kiki on drums, Gato on acoustic guitar, and Freddie on acoustic guitar.

The progress each of them has made skillwise on their instrument is beyond my explanation. God has definitely been providing us all with wisdom. For them, it’s the ability to learn something completely new to them at an exceptional rate. For me, it’s the ability to teach them these instruments when the teacher point of view is completely new territory for me. Even with the progress each has been making on their instruments, I would like to put an emphasis on the importance of living a worshipful life.

Please pray for me as I continue to minister to these 4 guys, and that God continues to show me what to do as His plan unravels.

FAME medical team

Hello everyone,

The FAME medical team is arriving today. There are 20 people on the team, including one doctor form the Dominican, Leslie Valenzuela. We will be doing medical camps for 5 days next week around the Samana area. Please pray that each heart is focused on the Lord and for blessings on all involved, locals and team members. May it be a life changing experience for all.

Del Corazon Running Club: 15 K

On Saturday May 26 we traveled to Santo Domingo to run our first 15 K. There is 6 in our group now but Yan was not allowed to participate because he is only 11, even though he can outrun me. We all did well, with the exception of me losing my toe nail and Freddy losing his lunch. Gato finished in 61 minutes, 21 out of 500. Thats very good for limited training and experience. Up next is the half marathon on June 24th. Lets hope I can keep my toe nails and Freddy can hold down his lunch.

Baseball is Back

This month we reorganized our baseball league. We have included teams from neighboring towns and now have 16 teams with over 200 kids aged 10-14 playing. These kids can play all day long and keep coming back for more. With 7 games on the weekend they sure keep us busy. Its great to see such passion.
